Fact Box

  • Elon Musk is a South African-born American immigrant who is the CEO/founder of several companies, including the electric car maker Tesla, rocket producer Space X, the infrastructure-building Boring Company, and Neuralink. He co-founded Open AI in 2015, the producers of ChatGPT and DALL-E. Musk purchased Twitter, later rebranded as X, in 2022 for almost $44 billion. As of February 2024, his net worth is around $200 billion.
  • The Justice Department warned that Elon Musk’s sweepstakes “may violate federal law” via the head of DOJ’s Election Crimes Branch, Robert Heberle. Paying anyone to register to vote or vote is an issue of contention.
  • Through the Political Action Committee, Elon Musk announced a $1 million sweepstakes for registered voters in swing states Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.
  • As of October 22, 2024, four prizes of $1 million have been given out to people who signed the petition. Three winners were from Pennsylvania and one was from North Carolina.

South African billionaire Elon Musk is committing a mistake by paying $1 million in exchange for voter registration. One of the main reasons is that many legal analysts have claimed his action is illegal as federal law prohibits paying anyone to register to vote. Some media outlets have described Musk’s petition language as promising a million dollars to a person chosen randomly for signing a petition that pledges full support for the First and Second Amendments. They added that those who can sign it must be registered to vote in seven battleground states.

Musk shouldn't be doing this, as initiating the millionaire sweepstakes for voter registration undermines voting’s seriousness by trivializing the democratic process; it isn't right. What he’s doing is turning voter registration into some kind of game with a financial incentive instead of a crucial responsibility. Also, Musk’s action has some massive ethical issues because even when a sweepstakes for registration doesn’t necessarily mean that people will be paid in exchange for voting, many could see it like he’s incentivizing voter participation by offering a millionaire amount of money.

Finally, Musk is committing a mistake with this action, as it could encourage and result in fraudulent registrations. After all, he’s offering a massive financial incentive in which many people could illegally register on multiple occasions to increase their chances of getting money. This, of course, complicates the full integrity and transparency of the voter rolls.

Musk could be initiating his millionaire sweepstakes for voter registration with good intentions. However, all these ethical complications and possible illegality make it hard to defend his actions.

Musk's 1 million dollar PAC giveaway intended to encourage swing states to show up on election day is undeniably clever and tactical. Voter apathy is one of the biggest obstacles in the democratic process, and there’s no better way to sway potential voters than by paying them. It’s a modern solution to a modern problem. A substantial segment of Americans find several reasons not to vote, and Musk is counteracting this by appealing to their bank account. Besides, there is an even deeper cause at play in this act as well.

Contained within the details of the PAC giveaway is a concerted effort to preserve and protect both the First and Second Amendments. Elon’s intentions are, therefore, entirely rooted in patriotism. The entire Trump administration has a proven track record when it comes to the stabilization of the American economy. Musk's giveaway is another way to stimulate a fledgling economic picture in this country by spreading millions of dollars around. It’s, quite literally, the Trump administration “putting their money where their mouth is,” so to speak, while the Harris team has only asked for money in the form of donations.

As the wealthiest person in the world, Musk is 'sharing the wealth' in his own peculiar way. This would seemingly be a sign of things to come if Trump is indeed re-elected this November. It’s important to remember that this giveaway is, in actuality, the equivalent of signing a petition. All things considered, it is undoubtedly the most elaborate and lucrative petition in recent history. Musk's actions have generated more attention and discussion over some of the most important issues and questions our nation faces as we head into the final stretch of the 2024 Presidential election.
