Is the MAGA movement a threat to America?
Fact Box
- Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States on January 20, 2017. His policies centered around bringing American jobs back, achieving peace through effective foreign policy, securing the Southern border, and making American energy independent, among other objectives.
- Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” first came from Ronald Reagan’s famous campaign slogan “Let’s Make America Great Again” for the 1980 presidential election.
- On September 1, 2022, President Biden stated during a speech leading up to the midterm elections that “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”
- A 2022 Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 58% of American respondents believed Trump’s MAGA movement was “threatening America's democratic foundations,” however, most Republicans did not think the MAGA movement was representative of the party as a whole.

'Not every Republican, not even a majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans. Not every Republican embraces their extreme ideology,' these words, spoken by President Biden, directly associate the MAGA movement with extremism. A primary accusation against the 'Make America Great Again' movement or those who support Trump is due to the infamous January 6th 'insurrection,' which the FBI has since denounced as being an official insurrection. Even Trump denounced the Capitol Riot on January 6th. As the MAGA movement is much larger than a few bad actors and, as a whole, has good intentions for the country, the MAGA movement should not be seen as a threat to America.
Contrary to the coverage of the event, not everyone on January 6th had ill intentions. While crimes were committed by some in the crowd, many protestors never went inside. Many of those who entered the Capital were respectful, even being welcomed in by law enforcement. Protesting the government is not a crime but is protected under the First Amendment. Left-wing protestors understand this and have committed their share of violent uprisings in public spaces, including BLM's 'mostly peaceful' summer protest/riots of 2020, which then VP-candidate Kamala Harris supported. Oftentimes, Democrats don’t decry protests in favor of their causes. Instead, they openly demonize the MAGA movement and generally oppose anyone who votes Republican or alongside conservative values.
Republican political priorities vastly differ from how Democrats run things, which is why MAGA and conservatives are denounced as a 'threat to democracy.' All the movement wants is to see government policies help Americans economically and socially, while maintaining a strong military, border, and international presence. These goals are good for everyone and would indeed make America great domestically and on the world stage again.

President Joe Biden's October 2022 speech implored Americans to save democracy from lies and violence while decrying the 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) movement. The movement, introduced by then-President Donald Trump, was a way to call back to a supposed better time in American history. However, whom America was better for seems to be a select class of rich, White men. The movement has often been deemed as a 'dog whistle' for more insidious movements such as White supremacy and bigotry.
Most Americans believe the movement threatens democracy, as some MAGA followers made erroneous claims that the 2020 presidential election was tampered with or stolen by President Biden through false mail-in votes, leading them to breach the Capital on January 6th. Respecting the fair outcome of the voting process is an essential component of a fair democracy. Several elected officials who support the movement have been under investigation for their involvement with the January 6th events at the Capitol. Trump told his followers, “we are going to the Capitol [...] to try and give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country,” right before an attack on the sitting Congress happened. He said this hoping Mike Pence would overturn the 2020 election results.
The MAGA movement has clearly sided with violence and destruction, hoping to take their wants by force. Further, the movement seems to reject any information that doesn't suit its agenda. Proponents of the movement have blocked the ability of scientists to publish information on climate change and have associated themselves with White Supremacist groups. Actions like these have real effects on many people and should be seen as a direct threat to the way of life for many Americans.
