Fact Box

  • A December 2023 YouGov poll revealed that most American women wore makeup on special occasions, while 38% wore it multiple times a week. The most popular products were mascara, lipstick, and foundation.
  • To prevent pores from clogging, products labeled oil-free, or non-comedogenic can be used. It is also important to thoroughly cleanse the face and wash makeup applicators and brushes regularly.
  • Sleeping with makeup on can clog pores as well as cause skin to get inflamed, have a dull appearance, or get more wrinkles.
  • Some cosmetics can cause acne cosmetica, which are tiny bumps that appear on the cheeks, chin, or forehead.
  • Makeup should be removed before working out because makeup covers the skin and doesn’t allow pores and sweat glands to cool the skin while exercising.

Wearing makeup gets us used to seeing ourselves in the mirror or in photos in an altered or 'enhanced' state that doesn't reflect our natural beauty. This can ultimately be a disservice to our mental well-being by undermining (or perhaps outright damaging) our satisfaction with our natural appearance. Besides, the more makeup we use, the more we'll need because cosmetics tax our natural facial features, worsening the signs of aging (in some cases creating wrinkles), clogging pores, which worsen acne, removing eyelashes, etc. Not to mention, makeup brands still unnecessarily test on animals, even sourcing certain ingredients from them.

Makeup use increases the odds of irritation, allergic reactions, and eye infections. Plus, it exposes our bodies (and bloodstreams) to a wide range of chemicals we'd usually never consider consuming—microplastics and other potentially harmful ingredients such as silica, chromium, arsenic, coal tar, and even formaldehyde, which are often found in makeup products.

Furthermore, the environmental impact of cosmetics is a pressing issue. Plastics and other waste from these products end up polluting our oceans and landfills, contributing to the global waste crisis. Before they become waste, these products take up space in our homes, stain our belongings, and cost us significant time and money over the years. We would be better off redirecting these resources towards more sustainable and beneficial activities for ourselves and the planet.

Finally, abstaining from constantly wearing makeup would make for a more authentic society that can welcome 'imperfection' rather than obsessing over presenting false appearances of ourselves. We're better off in many ways by simply embracing how we look and presenting ourselves with confidence from within.

Makeup has sometimes had a bad reputation, but that is because people are unaware of the infinite amount of makeup products available that can actually improve skin or protect it through built-in UV protection. There is makeup that can clear acne or even hide and minimize wrinkles. In some cases, it can be beneficial to wear makeup every day—but only if you find the right products.

While it's true some makeup can be toxic for your skin, when one invests in the right products, it can work wonders. It is important to check the active ingredients in makeup, and some, such as niacinamide, SPF, or hyaluronic acid can improve the look and feel of your skin over time. In fact, makeup can even protect your skin, especially from sun damage, pollution, and other earthly elements

Regrettably, we live in a world where first impressions are often based on appearance. Makeup can level the playing field, especially in professional settings, by enhancing our features and boosting our confidence. It's a tool that can be applied or removed at any time, allowing us to feel more 'put together' and self-assured. When we feel good about our appearance, it can significantly improve our mental health and uplift us psychologically.

Finally, makeup is fun to wear and put on. It can be a conversation starter, and it is not permanent. It can even be used for creative expression, making going to work, a party, or even mundane daily tasks, like grocery shopping, more fun. The possibilities of makeup today are endless, and there is 'power' to putting it on daily. Applying a pop of vibrant eye shadow or covering an unsightly blemish can certainly improve anyone's day and bolster their confidence.
